Introduction to Joomla! 3

Hi, my name is Rod Martin and I'll be your instructor for this course. As you can see on the screen, we have a seven step process for building a Joomla website and that's what this is. It's an introduction to site building using Joomla, right out of the box. The first step is planning. If you don't plan, well...well you're probably not going to execute well. So we'll talk a little bit about that. We've done most of the planning for you in this class. Number two is install and I'll go over four ways you can get started with Joomla. Number three is content. Content is everything. In fact, you can't start building the rest of your Joomla site until you at least get some of the content in, preferably most of it, because that's really what Joomla is designed to do - it's a content management system. I'll talk a little bit more about that in an upcoming video. Number four is extend. Joomla comes with some fantastic extensions. There are five kinds of extension. I'll cover each one in depth. We'll look at each of the extensions that comes with Joomla out of the box and we'll build that right into the site that we're going to create. Number five is design and this is where we start to see that look and the feel of our site start to come together. It's really hard to do that before you do the other steps, although you can apply your template at any point, you really can't get the look and feel that you want until your content is in and your extensions are set up. Number six is people. People is an important part. User management in Joomla is very sophisticated. It's called access control and it determines what people can see and what people can do. Finally, number seven: managing your site. I'm going to talk about managing your site all the way through the course but, at the end, I'm going to give you some tips on and things you can do to make sure your site stays really healthy. Alright, just a couple of things before we get started. Number one, this is a participatory course. By that I mean I encourage you all the way through to do all the exercises with me. It's one thing to watch a video, and video is great, but you really learn when you do the exercises with me. I give you plenty of time to do that and the good thing is, of course, it's video so you can pause it anyway. Number two, this is video so you can pause along the way. That's the great thing about video training. If you need to stop and rewind, you can. If you need to run out and grab a coffee or have an image out of Google or off your hard drive you can pause the video and rewind it, watch it as many times as you want. Finally, and this is an introduction to joomla. Joomla's huge. I mean, it powers some of the most impressive websites around the world. It's an amazing content management system and in these 40 videos i can't possibly help you see every nuance, every possible option, that you might have. My goal is that, by the time we're done, you'll have this site up on your screen. Alright, are you ready? Let's dive in.
